New iPod shuffle’s headphone requirement shafts consumers

New Apple shuffle... um yeah, great work guys.Today Apple announced the new iPod Shuffle and the big “new” feature on it is the absence of buttons. Apparently the solution for those using the shuffle is to navigate music via the headphones, which is great if you like wearing sub-par plastic pieces of trash in your ears.

Now, I realize that some people actually enjoy the feel of the standard Apple earbuds, and I realize they are very popular. However, I have seen a LOT of people that use 3rd party headphones with their iPod/iPhone (a brief office poll here at Imulus came up with over half of us using non-Apple headphones). So let’s just be honest, what this really feels like is a ploy to make you purchase the high-end Apple earbuds. And if you’re like me and hate earbuds in general because they hurt your ears, you’re basically out of luck.

Even if Apple decides to release their headphone control technology to 3rd parties I still have to purchase a new set of headphones to use while running, or at minimum a new control cord add-on for my current phones, which is sure to be a minimum of $20. Now suddenly to get a lightweight mp3 player for running I am dropping $79 plus $20.

This is a great example of how Apple’s want to simplify can be taken too far. In theory it sounds great, but in practice it ends up creating a mess for everyone but the most default basic customers. And worse, it makes Apple look greedy and out of touch.

I suggest that one ought to buy a product from some other company if Apple's ear buds and strategy annoys one :) If I may dare to suggest Canyon* because they have a nice selection and a cheap one at that, too.

I couldn't agree more, and this is coming from someone who uses nothing but Apple headphones. I use my headphones everyday at work and they're starting to come apart. They have withstood more wear than other headphones but it's inevitable that they will take a beating. By doing this, we are forced to spend more on the equipment that takes the most wear, therefore it's more costly in the long run.

Well put, but the problem is in general I like Apple's attention to detail and the quality of their products.

I just wish they hadn't tried to over simplify this already successful product. The shuffle with buttons was beautiful and worked great, why mess that up? If forced to I will purchase products from another vendor, however, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that.

I love apple earbuds… but how can I plug this into the aux input in my car?? I don't even care that much about a company trying to lock me in to their other products (especially if I like those products), though of course I'd rather they didn't, but if it gives me a better overall experience then I'll deal. But this seems like a shortsighted design decision because now it's impossible for my overall experience to be good because I can't use it in my car.

That is a straight bullshit move. That seems completely un-Apple and more like something Sony would do. I would just like to cut the ear-buds off and re-wire my own ear piece to it. Bad Apple… Bad (I don't say that very often)

Simply put, perfect… These ear phones stay put while running, sound great and are bomb proof. It is so nice to wash them off under the faucet when they get dirty.

I am very impressed by new updates of iPod touch. It’s not all thumbs. I was thinking of getting rid of iPod Nano for this new one because of both the radio and the camera really having good quality. Thank you so much for sharing informations about compatible headsets.

I thought it was the headphones and got a new pair from apple for free out of the deal. Sure I am glad when I find great and good information that discusses about headphone function and requirement shafts consumers. You make high quality information and very useful for everyone. I’m sure that everyone has the same opinion like me. I hope you can start posting information like this again. Thanks.
