Recovering That Long Forgotten Page Design

Ever wish for a copy of what your homepage used to look like?
I know I have. Many times I wished I remembered to take a screen capture of a few pages before the entire site was replaced. For years I relied on archive.org and the WayBackMachine. Those services however often only store content and structure, not the entire page design. Last week I stumbled on a tucked away feature of Domain Tools that provides a medium size capture of an old site design.
Here’s how.
First, do a domain search on the site you want to recover. In this case, I’m searching for “imulus.com” and this is the result page below.

Second, click on this image of the homepage and you’ll be taken to several thumbnails that Domain Tools have taken over the years. Clicking on any of these images will bring up a capture. I’ve found that pre-2007 images are much lower resolution than post-2007 images.

Lastly, once you are seeing the full resolution capture, right click and do a “save as”. I wish there was a simple “download” option, but this is what we have to work with. Glad the folks at Domain Tools keep and archive like this and are leaving it open to the public.
